FAQ's
Pre-Hire
What is a long-term car rental?
A long-term car rental refers to renting a vehicle for an extended period of time (minimum 14 days) to take advantage of the flexibility and cost-effectiveness on offer.
What are the benefits of a long-term rental?
Renting long-term can be a flexible alternative to buying a cheap, potentially unreliable car for your time here in NZ. We take care of insurance, a Certificate of Fitness, registration and maintenance costs to give you the peace of mind you deserve.
What are your minimum rental durations?
Our minimum rental duration is 14 days. For shorter term rentals, please check out our sister brand Mode Rentals.
What are the payment options for long-term rentals?
- Full payment is required at the time of booking
- A security bond is payable upon vehicle pick up
- Payment for the first 8 weeks (plus any applicable fees) is required at the time of booking
- Six weeks after the hire begins, payment is taken in advance for the next 4 weeks (or the remaining balance if fewer than 4 weeks remain)
- Every 4 weeks thereafter, payment is processed in the same way until the end of the hire
Do you offer an excess waiver option on your car rental insurance?
We offer the option to reduce your hirer liability limit from our standard $1,200 to $600 (fees apply).
Is insurance included in the rental cost?
Yes, our vehicles include full comprehensive insurance.
Our standard Hirer Liability Limit is $1,200 and this can optionally be reduced to $600 upon payment of the related fees.
What documents are required to rent a car long-term?
To rent a car long-term, we will need a valid driver licence—either a NZ Driver Licence or an approved International Driver Licence, and a credit or debit card for payment in the name of the driver.
Which drivers licence are covered by Zeal’s insurance?
All international drivers’ licence that are accepted in NZ and meet the criteria as stipulated by the NZTA will be acceptable. Click on this link NZTA for more information.
Are there any mileage restrictions for long-term rentals?
For long-term rentals, we have a fair usage cap of 48,000km per year. For shorter-term rentals, there is unlimited mileage.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
At the time of booking, you’ll pay for the first 56 days of your rental (or less, if your booking is shorter), plus any compulsory fees such as liability reduction.
For bookings of 56 days or less, full payment is required at the time of booking.
For bookings longer than 56 days, ongoing payments will be processed in 56-day instalments, with the next payment taken two weeks after your rental begins, and then every 56 days thereafter.
The refundable bond is payable when you pick up your vehicle.
Please note: Deposits are 100% refundable if the booking is cancelled at least 7 days before your pick-up date.
What is your standard cancellation policy?
Before the hire starts, you may cancel up to 7 days prior to the start date. If you cancel within 7 days of the booked collection date, a cancellation fee of $250 will be applicable.
During the hire, you will need to give us one month’s notice should you wish to return your vehicle early, and the regular rental rate will be payable for all of that notice period.
Are your prices in NZD or USD?
All our prices are listed in New Zealand Dollars (NZD).
Is GPS included with my rental?
GPS is not included. We recommend using your smartphone or a navigation app for directions.
During-Hire
What happens if the car breaks down during the rental period?
We hand-pick quality cars known for their sturdiness and lack of issues. However, sometimes issues occur so we offer 24/7 roadside assistance via New Zealand Roadside Assistance (NZRA). Simply call the NZRA service number provided when you pick up your rental car.
Does my vehicle need a Certificate of Fitness (COF) during my hire period?
A certificate of Fitness (COF) is a standard safety check required every 6 months for rental vehicles in New Zealand. For longer hire periods, your vehicle may be due for a Certificate of Fitness (COF) inspection while you have it.
What happens if a COF is due during my hire?
- We’ll let you know before your hire if a COF will be due mid-hire so you can plan ahead.
- The inspection is quick (usually under an hour) and can be done at any approved VTNZ, VINZ or AA testing station.
- If you’re close to one of our branches, you’re welcome to bring the vehicle in and we can arrange the COF for you.
- The cost of the inspection is fully covered by us.
- If any issues arise we will assist in getting those promptly sorted.
What happens if my vehicle is due for a service during my hire?
For very long hires or if you’re travelling high kilometres, your vehicle may become due for a scheduled service while you have it.
- While we can’t always predict exactly when a service will fall due – as it depends on how far you travel – we’ll do our best to anticipate in advance if it seems likely based on your booking details.
- If a service becomes due during your trip, we’ll ask you to bring the vehicle either to one of our branches or to a nominated service provider (such as Bridgestone Select branches nationwide).
- We’ll cover the full cost of the service.
- If you’re unsure whether a service might be coming up during your hire, please check with us – especially if you’re travelling large distances – so we can avoid any inconvenience.
