2. Can I drive to the South Island on a ferry?
A. Yes, you can. You can drive your car onto a ferry (like the Interislander or Bluebridge) in Wellington, and sail across the Cook Strait to Picton. From there, you can drive off the ferry and continue your road trip in the South Island.
Alternatively, you can also book a ferry transfer and move the car from Wellington to Picton before continuing your journey. If the rental is a round-trip rental, you will need to follow the same procedure on the return. If it’s a one-way rental, you can drop it off at any of our other convenient locations around New Zealand.
